Westbury Lane United Neighbours
Newsletter

Dear Coombe Dingle & Sea Mills neighbour,

We have become aware of a proposed new housing development on the land at 1 Arbutus Drive and 26-28 Westbury Lane in Coombe Dingle (Planning application no: 04/01394/F/N).

We thought that as fellow neighbours you would want to hear about this, and know that other residents are concerned about the negative impacts that this development will bring.

The proposal, although not yet approved by Bristol City Council, is to build 14 houses and 6 flats on the site currently occupied by three bungalows (which are to be demolished). We attach a drawing obtained from Bristol City planning department that shows the proposals for the site.

As residents of Coombe Dingle and Sea Mills, we believe this proposal will have severe impacts on our community, and upon those of us whom enjoy living in this area. These include:

    • Traffic Increase - Westbury Lane is already an extremely busy road - especially now it is on the route of the #41 bus. This development will increase traffic and potentially affect the safety of pedestrians and local school children
    • Parking problems - Westbury Lane and surrounding roads are likely be used as a parking overflow, adding to the traffic and safety problems
    • Impact on the landscape - the proposals include the removal of mature and established trees and hedges - out of character with an area such as ours that is situated between 3 conservation areas.
    • The site design shows little appreciation for the unique area in which we all live. The designs of the buildings are inconsistent and the building heights are also substantial - with some 3 storey buildings proposed

    So what are we doing?

The Westbury Lane United Neighbours Association (WLUN) has recently been set up by concerned residents. We aim to oppose this development, and to provide a united voice for all those who are concerned by these proposals

The 'Leave Our Lane Alone' (LOLA) Campaign aims to publicise the fact that the development is being planned. We want to ensure that our unique locality is left intact for further generations to enjoy.

So what can you do to help?

    • Voice your disapproval - write a letter to Bristol City Council stating that you are opposed to this development. This is the best way to register your concern. Letters must be received by the 2nd June. For ease, we have attached a template letter for you to use if you so wish.
    • Show Your Support - a 'LOLA' poster is attached - please display this in a prominent window in your house, to help show the level of feeling in the community
    • Find out more - we will be holding a public meeting on 26th May at Sea Mills Infants School (7.30 pm), to which all local residents are invited. We have copies of the proposed plans for you to view, and it will give all the chance to discuss the damage that the development will bring if it goes ahead.
    • Join us! E-mail us for updates at: leaveourlanealone@hotmail.com

Public Meeting: 7.30pm 26th May - Sea Mills Infants School, Hallen Drive
